Innovation of Smoking Cessation Education Through Tobaccogame in Academic Hospital Universitas Gadjah Mada

Abstract. Growing population and shifting pattern of diseases, including non-communicable diseases, especially diseases caused by smoking, require various promotion and prevention approaches. The increase of cigarette consumption leads to higher burden of smoking-related diseases and increased mortality due to smoking, requires not only curative aspect, but also promotion and prevention aspects. The important step to eliminate smoking habit is changing smoker’s mindset. Changing mindset to quit smoking is the first and an important step in being able to fully quit smoking. The purpose of making TobaccoGame is to make a fun educational media, to detect risk factors for diseases caused by smoking and smoking cessation counseling. Methods. Innovative methods of smoking cessation education include making TobaccoGame analog board game, training of health workers and health cadres to use TobaccoGame, followed by smoking cessation education for patients and visitors of Academic Hospital Universitas Gadjah Mada using TobaccoGame. Result and Discussion. TobaccoGame, an analog board game designed to be played in a group to create social interaction among the players, was successfully created. The identification of the risk smoking-related diseases, early detection questionnaires, types of smoking-related diseases and suggestions for further examinations as well as efforts to quit smoking were integrated into the design of TobaccoGame. Health cadres and workers were trained as game facilitators, showed satisfaction and improved understanding to perform early detection of smoking-related diseases, provide education for further examinations, and conduct health promotion as an effort to stop smoking. Qualitative evaluation of smokers over 40 years old who took part in the TobaccoGame game raised awareness that there were a risk of illness in themselves related to smoking, the desire to further examined and enhanced motivation to quit smoking. Conclusion. TobaccoGame analog board game can provide a more creative and fun option of educational methods for smoking cessation.
