As a democracy university, Universitas Gadjah Mada gives very big attention to explore, collect, develop, and disseminate knowledge that benefits to Indonesia’s development and the welfare of its people directly.
To facilitate and synergize the sustainable community service activities, UGM is committed in establishing the SDGs Center which has also been recognized by the Ministry of National Development Planning / Head of the Development Planning Agency of the Republic of Indonesia as an institution that responsible for the SDGs achievement nationally.
This forum was attended by the Minister of National Development Planning / Head of National Development Planning Agency of the Republic of Indonesia, who in this case was represented by the Deputy for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources, Dr. Ir. Arifin Rudiyanto, MSc.; Director General of Transmigration Area Development, Ministry of Villages, Remote Area and Transmigration Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Ir. HM Nurdin, MT.; Director of Disaster Risk Reduction, National Disaster Management Agency, (Dr. Raditya Jati, S.Si., M.Sc.; Head of Responsibility Monitoring and Evaluation Social and Environmental Responsibility of the Ministry of SOEs, Mr. Sandra Firmania.; Head of North Penajam Paser District, H. Abdul Gafur Mas’ud; and Heads of Bappeda Yogyakarta.
It is expected that UGM SDGs Center will be able to play its role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals as the national development targets, by providing innovations and solutions for SDGs, creating current and future SDGs implementers, demonstrating how to support, adopt and implement SDGs, and developing partnership and leadership between sectors to guide in responding to SDGs.
It’s expected that the Tridharma of Higher Education which are research, education, and community services can contribute in achieving SDGs in Indonesia. Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D.Eng., said, “As university plays an important role in the achievement of SDGs, it must be able to become a center of excellence in the field of science in accordance with its core competencies, uses the pillars of SDGs in the education or teaching process, become partners of the central and regional governments and other stakeholders in monitoring and evaluating the implementation of SDGs.”
The SDGs Center of UGM, which was inaugurated by the Ministry of National Development Planning today on 28 August 2019 in Tara Hotel Yogyakarta, is expected to be able to map all university activities that are in line with SDGs including inserting the SDGs content in courses and and Student-Community-Services (KKN), developing campus internal capacity and building a sense of ownership of SDGs, identifying priorities, opportunities , and the Global Action Plan in implementing SDGs, as well as ensuring the internalization of SDGs into university strategies, policies and work are sustainable.
The SDGs Center of UGM is also expected to play a role in supporting the initiation and development of collaborative networking on other universities SDGs Centers in Java Region in particular, and throughout Indonesia in general. IThe establishment of SDGs Center in UGM becomes one of the concerns of RCE Yogyakarta in supporting theSDGs implementation and achievements in Universitas Gadjah Mada and Special Region of Yogyakarta.
