Abstract. “Balkondes” (Balai ekonomi desa) is built for economic center of a village. Balkondes in Wanurejo needs a specific character to compete and complete with other village’s Balkondes in Borobudur area. According to several considerations: (1) possibility of the development and utilization of herbal plants as a bridge to build “back to nature” paradigm to attract overseas tourists in the Borobudur area, (2) the existence of herbal plants utilization as products of food, herbal medicines, cosmetics, relaxing agent, and souvenirs for tourists in the Borobudur area, and (3) possibility of synergism between the utilization of herbal plants as traditional medicines in the old and modern times as described through one of Candi Borobudur’s relief; thus, the team of community services Faculty of Pharmacy UGM conducted a series activity of community services based on the Village Development Program funded by UGM with a theme: Development of Wanurejo Village as Herbal-based Health Tourism. The main goal of this multi year community service activity is to establish “Dewi Wanu (Desa Wisata Wanurejo) as Herbal-based Health Tourism centered at Balkondes Wanurejo. The concept of Balkondes Wanurejo as Herbal Center covers 5 areas: (a) Family-based Herbal Plants (Taman Obat Keluarga: TOGA) demonstration plot (demplot) area as a display of the herbal plants utilized as products in the form of both simplisia and final herbal product, (b) Herbal Products (both ready-to-drink and packaged products) with live show of herbs-making, (c) cosmetics and herbal repellant products (both ready-to-use and packaged products) with live show of cosmetics application, (d) snacks, drinks, and food area, (e) relaxation area which provides reflexology center and aroma therapy facilities. In order to realize that grand design, starting from 2018, the Pharmacy UGM team carried out many community service activities including: (1) Education on Disease and Its Prevention, (2) Education on Pharmacological and Toxicity Effects of Herbal Medicine:), (3) Training on How to Cultivate the Herbal Medicine Plants, (4) Training on How to Produce Simplisia of Herbal Medicine Plants, (5) Introduction of TOGA’s demplot, (6) Training on Herbal Cosmetics Production Innovation such as body-scrub and face mask, (7) Training on Fresh Herbs, Instant Herbs, and Syrup Processing Innovation, and (8) Drafting of pocket book on herbal plants utilization. The examples of products that have been formulated in those trainings were green tea body-scrub, acne facemask, fresh herbs (kunir asam, beras kencur), instant herbs (ginger), and ginger syrup. In 2019, several community service activities have been conducted by Pharmacy UGM team, for example: (1) Tillage for TOGA Demplot, (2) Provide the herbal medicinal plants for TOGA demplot from Merapi Pharma, Faculty of Pharmacy UGM, and B2P2TOOT Tawangmangu, (3) TOGA Demplot Cultivation, (4) Training on Herbal Pearl Production, (5) Training on Fresh Bitter Herbs Production, (6) Training on Herbal Jelly Candy Production, and (7) Arrangement of organizational structure team to manage the Herbal Center of Dewi Wanu at Balkondes Wanurejo. This organization consists of two divisions: 1. TOGA demplot division consists of Gapoktan (Farmers Community of Wanurejo) to manage TOGA demplot and 2. Herbal production division consists of a group of women in Wanurejo village. The final products were packaged nicely as souvenirs for overseas and local tourists. Participants of all community service activities of Village Development Program were Gapoktan and women from Wanurejo Village. Trainers were lecturers and alumni of Faculty of Pharmacy UGM. All participants were enthusiasm and excited when attend the training due to their need in order to increase their health and economy quality.
