Abstract. As a strategic program to keep the Bedog River sustainable, the riparian vegetation conservation program was implemented on the school communities in the Sidoarum, Godean, Sleman, D.I. Yogyakarta started in SMPIT Alam Nurul Islam. The concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) which underlies the conservation program was delivered using education and training method progressively. The methods and materials of education and training were designed to support teachers and students in understanding the conservation of riparian vegetation. First, knowledge and skills in plant identification, techniques for making herbarium and riparian vegetation monitoring using vegetation profile analysis method were given to students. To ensure the sustainability of the program, two approaches were applied: (1) incorporating the concept of riparian vegetation conservation program into the school curriculum through science teachers, especially in Biology and (2) assisting riparian vegetation monitoring activities by the school community through teachers and the Deputy Chief of Curriculum. Furthermore, dissemination of the program was carried out by inviting several local headman (village chiefs) as well as teachers and students from other schools around the Bedog River to take part in scientific discussion and Bedog care actions by bio-monitoring and clean rubbish activities. As an outcome, the Nurul Islam Foundation submitted a request to the Head of Sidoarum to use the communal land next to the school as an educational forest along with riparian vegetation conservation land.
